RETN

What exactly does it mean to be a television station today? The boundaries have become blurry and the playing field is wide open. When everyone who owns a smartphone, tablet, or laptop is basically carrying around a television set with them 24/7, you don't need a couch to channel surf; the act of ‘watching TV’ is suddenly ubiquitous.

RETN is our local educational television station. They came to Methodikal for help in breathing some life into their brand and positioning them for success in the new reality of TV. We assessed exactly what it means to be a television station today, how to unify all of RETN’s content channels, and how to marry its twin missions of being a television station and being an asset to educators and schools in the area.

Once the strategy work was done, RETN’s graphic identity and tagline were an obvious next step. The old logo was somewhat dark and foreboding, and the tagline spoke more to what they did than what they stood for. At first, they weren’t totally ready to abandon the old look, so we went through an exploration that included tweaking the existing mark and looking at something completely new.

In the end, they saw the value of making a wholesale change. The new brand identity is evocative of both education (building blocks) and TV (the tube shape). The color palette is vibrant and bold, conveying confidence in RETN’s mission. And the new tagline (“Watch & Learn”) is both descriptive of what they do (broadcasting shows, teaching people how to use production technology, inspiring educators and students) and emotionally resonant with RETN’s staff and audience.

After the initial branding work was done, we set about applying it to the whole brand, including a new website design, on-air graphics, and every other place where someone can experience RETN. We’re super proud of the results and the client has really embraced the change.
